Birth Injuries Attorney

Did you take Paxil during your pregnancy?
If so, and your child was born with a birth defect,
then please contact Bailey and Galyen immediately about filing your claim.

In December 2005, the FDA issued a health alert to all doctors and patients about the potential dangers of taking Paxil during the first trimester of a pregnancy. Studies have shown that pregnant women using Paxil in the first three months of pregnancies are twice as likely to have a baby with a heart defect. These defects have been holes in the ventricles and atria of the heart.

In addition, there is evidence of a connection between Paxil and the development of a lung defect known as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). In such cases, the blood pressure is too high in the blood vessels between the baby's heart and the lungs, and, because of this, there is less oxygen in the bloodstream for use by the body. A recently published study has shown that infants born to mothers who took SSRIs, like Paxil, after the 20th week of pregnancy were six times more likely to have PPHN than infants born to mothers who did not take antidepressants during pregnancy.
